Junior Ilkley Harriers is the junior section of Ilkley Harriers AC and provides training, racing, and social activities for young athletes. The Club colours are red and green. Please send any enquiries to Shirley (email ).
Harry Maslen has been a great ambassador for Ilkley Harriers in Track & Field Athletics over the last five years. He has twice represented West Yorkshire at the ESSA Championships in 2011 as an U15 and in 2013 as an U17 (see both videos below). In each case he missed out competing in the finals by the smallest of margins. Our juniors have the opportunity to try all aspects of Track and Field Athletics.
See videos here. Thanks to Martyn Pearce.
At Hellifield Gala in August 2012, Lucy Williamson became the new U16 girls Yorkshire Champion and received a magnificent Yorkshire Champion trophy. In September 2013 she gained her first England vest at the Junior Mountain Running Home Internationals.
There are many opportunities for juniors to train on the fells and compete in both FRA and BOFRA events throughout the year.
Some of the Sportshall Athletics coaches and juniors help celebrate the award of ClubMark, after receiving their own individual Sportshall Athletics certificates and medals at the March 11-15 years presentation evening.
Juniors from 8 to 15 years enjoy taking part in Sportshall Athletics each week and some go on to attend regional trials and represent West or North Yorkshire.
We are currently in the process of re-accreditation.
We're looking forward to our best ever Cross-country season.
Ilkley caters for cross-country runners of all ages and abilities from organising the local Wharfedale primary schools XC League to competing at club level at the PECO and Complete Runner Leagues or at the annual Championship events.
In 2013 we hired a coach to take athletes, parents and supporters to a snowy Sunderland for the National XC Championships.
Get out there and get muddy in 2013.
Relays are great fun, whether it's on the fells or over the terrain. On the 1st July 2012 twenty-six juniors and their parents took part in a very special relay to mark the Olympic Games. The 'Real Relay' followed the route of the torch relay but was run every step of the way, day and night by runners passing a single 'baton' from one to the next.
What a fantastic achievement.
All our juniors (15 years and older) have the opportunity to help at coaching sessions and gain nationally recognised awards.
The photo shows the 13 Junior Harriers who were presented with their Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership at the Ilkley Harriers Presentation Evening, January 2012.
In Spring 2013 five of these juniors successfully completed their Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership. Currently 20 juniors are part way through their leadership awards.
We encourage our athletes to continue doing all activities as long as possible and not to specialise. Three of our juniors won medals at the Yorkshire Combined Events Championships at Carnegie in September 2012.
Harry Maslen and Dan Judkowski took gold and silver medals in the U17s and Roisin Ramage took gold in the U13's.
Harry Maslen regained his title in August 2013.
... What a brilliant Junior presentation evening. Thanks to all the juniors and parents who attended - great food, disco and all the award winners were so deserving.
...to all the children who ran in the 70 teams in the Nell Bank Relays, the finale of the Wharfedale Primary Schools XC League. Here are theresults with team and individual times. It was also the presentation of the League results. Uncollected certificates will be sent to schools in two weeks time. Have a look at the Woodentops photos.
... to Poppy's mum Kim Anderson who has written this brilliant piece about fell running, and why everyone should have a go. Read it here. The calendar of this year's BOFRA fell races has just come out too, and the Bunny Runs start soon too (age 12+).
Sessions have now finished for Easter - only session going through the Easter holidays is Wondimu's Wednesday speed training for Year 7 and older who compete. However there is NO session on the 16th April as neither Kate or myself can be present.
